Abia Govt Ready To Achieve 100% Success In Eradication of Polio

 

Deputy Governor of Abia State, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, says the state government's target to completely eradicate Poliomyelitis in the state will be vigorously pursued to achieve the 100% level of success previously recorded in the eradication of measles across the country.

Sir Oko Chukwu who stated this during a meeting with members of the Abia State immunization Task Force in his office at govt house Umuahia maintained that as a govt that is deliberately working towards extending life expectancy of citizens above national average, it will cue into this year's immunization mandate of ensuring a 100% success rate in the program commencing on Saturday this week.

The Deputy Governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Infornation, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, further disclosed that in its resolve to prevent high rate of infant mortality, govt is setting up a mother and child hospital in the state as well as strengthening primary healthcare institutions with improved communication link to secondary and tertiary health institutions in the state. He informed that the free home care service for senior citizens and the procurement of 6 mobile hospitals and ambulances are part of the efforts of the government to intervene at critical extremes of the healthcare spectrum in order to ensure that life expectancy in the state remains above national average.

Sir Oko Chukwu who is also the chairman of the Task Force stressed the need for community and political leaders in the state to be more proactively engaged in sensitizing the people on the importance and benefits derivable from participating in the immunization program. He also expressed appreciation to all the local and international partners who are working with the state on the immunization program and assured of govt's preparedness to advance the process of payment of relevant counterpart funds.

In his address, the Executive Secretary, Abia State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Chinagozi Adindu stated that in order to ensure a successful poliomyelitis immunization program in the state, the Agency will administer oral polio vaccines to children aged between 0-5 years as well as strive to meet the 15 years population target which they hope to achieve by improving on areas of routine immunization across the 17 LGAs, strategic campaigns and embarking on active surveillance and awareness.

Dr Adindu disclosed that this year's immunization program will be flagged off on Friday, 19th July 2019, at Aba North LGA by the wife of the Governor, Mrs Nkechi lkpeazu and expressed appreciation to the State and federal Governments for their assistance towards the success of the polio immunization program.

In their remarks, the WHO Representative in the state, Dr L.E Okoro, the chairman, Umuahia South traditional rulers council, Eze G.C Onwuka and a representative of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs Victoria Adindu appealed to parents and community leaders to ensure that information is passed to the target population on the full commencement of the immunization program which is expected to take place between the 20th and 24th of July 2019.Abia Govt Ready To Achieve 100% Success In Eradication of Polio
